RECLAIMING THE LOST DECADES

Yesterday and last night, following the death of the former president Ibrahim Nasir, a number of reports appeared on Maldivian media. I have learnt a lot of new information and historical facts that I wasn’t aware of before. Black and white photos and videos from Nasir’s period were shown on TVM. Historical researchers were interviewed about Nasir’s years of ruling and his achievements. All those things made me wonder why they couldn’t do it before.

Why couldn’t TVM show those reports and videos before or during last 3 decades that has passed after Nasir’s era. Now only they are acknowledging that Nasir was the real founder of the modern Maldives. Three decades has passed and many younger generations of Maldivians has finished their official education without even learning a single fact mentioned on those reports or by the analysts who were interviewed yesterday. It’s my belief that two or three decades in our history were purposely ignored by the government that succeeded after Nasir.

According to the limited literature and information available on the public domain regarding Ibrahim Nasir and his years or ruling, one can truly understand that he laid the foundation of the modern Maldives. He was the head of the government when we gained independence in 1965. He undertook the construction of Hulhule’ airport, under those challenging circumstances. We had the number one shipping line in Asia when he was the president. As per my knowledge atoll councils and atoll chiefs were elected democratically during a particular period in his years as a president. Though I can’t mention all those things, the list goes so long and indicates that he initiated most of the things or developments we see today including tourism. He laid the foundation and started those things even though they were further developed by the government that came after him.

So we should give credit to him for these good things he had done for us. We should learn about this period in our history. It’s not when he is dead we have to talk about it. We should have been learning about these things in our social studies when we were in grade 6 and 7.

May Allah bless his soul with eternal paradise and grant patience and strength to his family.

He was also a stringent dictator who killed and tortured many people in jails. Many people got blinded due to spending time in uva houses. Many were shot dead in huvadhoo atoll. This includes children as well. But one thing good can be said about this. Yes.. he was a true nationalist who loved the country. he would have defended the country and its soil regardless of what happened to the people in it. Huvadhoo bagaavaai was one of this. He did not want a part of raaje to go in to the hands of another . Raaaje remains like as it is today becos of him. His brutality , if we cared to balance between gayoom, is no lesser. Nasir was a complicated man. A visionary. Humble person. But yet a brutal dictator.

It was the prime duty of President Nasir who had sworn in as the leader of Islamic nation protect the sovereignty, integrity and religion of Maldives and to protect these foundation of the state President nasir had been obliged to crush any separatist movement in South. How about those involve in the separatist movement who wants to proclaim Christian Suvadib Republic with the British with christian Chargos as part of the Suvadib Republic. Nasir is a great leader and who fought to protect the sovereignty and religion of the Maldives.

Nasir was a pig...a dictator who had no respect for human rights or equality..
the bastard Nasir sentenced little children aged 4 to 12 as if killing their parents was not enough.
some at the age of just 12 were gang raped,
some were banished to different atolls at the age of 4,7 ,9 and 12. [ the victims are still alive and with us today ]
many were brought to male and tortured to death without trial.
the island was burnt and the people made homeless [depopulated?]
mothers with their new born babies had to flee the island
some died of starvation
the list would go on forever…..
these were crimes against humanity
do animals like him deserve to be praised?
some have commented as if there are exceptions to commit such inhuman and degrading acts. you really think this is justifiable?
what if a philanthropist like Gasim raped a woman and murdered a little child? would you say he should be considered noble and praise worthy as he has done more good to people? helped far too many people that, these few inhuman acts should not be counted?
never thought Anni would be a hypocrite...Anni condemned the golhaa government, called gayoom a torturer,a murderer, when evan naseem[a convict] was tortured to death in prison. but what about the animal Nasir, who has done far worse than golhaa could even imagine?
i used to joke, that the addu people would rather vote a goat than anyone else, if the goat was from Addu.now i know why.they were right.all us southerners should do the same. mahaldive is no place for us suadivians, these woulds will never heal now...as we are the SURVIVORS
